Simon Gabay

(Computational) Philologist

About

After studying at Paris IV–Sorbonne and St Andrews, Simon Gabay began writing his doctoral dissertation in Latin philology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on the history of the actor in the Middle Ages. For his postdoctoral work, he turned his research toward computational philology within the framework of a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project on Sévigné’s manuscripts at the University of Neuchâtel, where he created the first courses in digital humanities.

In 2020, he joined the University of Geneva as an assistant professor (Maître-assistant) in the chair of Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel, where he leads the FreEM project (resources and applications for Classical French) and FoNDUE (information extraction from historical documents). Previously, he directed the Katabase project (study of the manuscript market at the end of the 19th century) and Galli(corpor)a (development of tools for restructuring historical documents from Gallica).

His main research areas are early modern French philology, history of philology, classical literature, natural language processing, and optical character recognition.

His publications that are freely accessible online are available on HAL.

Projects

FreEM

FreEM corpora is a project dedicated to Early Modern French (16th–18th centuries). It provides corpora and NLP models for several core tasks, including lemmatisation, part-of-speech tagging, linguistic normalisation, and named entity recognition.

The project brings together specialists in NLP and philology in order to deliver accurate linguistic modelling, large-scale annotated corpora, state-of-the-art models, and linguistic studies of Early Modern French.

Project

Gallic(orpor)a

The Gallic(orpor)a project develops a pipeline for mass digitisation of historical documents. It focuses on French documents written between the 15th and the 18th centuries, may they be manuscripts, incunabula or prints. The project addresses three main tasks: document layout analysis, handwritten text recognition and linguistic annotation (lemmata, POS tags and morphology).

Project

Katabase

this project is at the junction of romance philology and computer science: by combining the needs of the first with the possibilities offered by the second, we plan to explore our capacity to automatically extract, structure and annotate sale catalogues to create a database of sold manuscripts in Paris since the beginning of the 19th c. Data will also be automatically analysed to identify same manuscripts sold mulptiple times over time, and reconstruct the history of manuscripts.
